  15. <p>     DIED. RAUL JULIA, 54, actor; from a stroke; in Manhasset, New
  16. York. Discovered in a San Juan, Puerto Rico, nightclub by American
  17. actor Orson Bean, Julia moved to Manhattan in 1964 and quickly
  18. found work in the theater. In 1966 he began appearing in Shakespearean
  19. roles, creating a deliciously conniving Edmund in King Lear
  20. in 1973 and a smoldering Othello in 1979. Julia also made his
  21. mark on the musical stage, playing one of the Two Gentlemen
  22. of Verona (1971); a chilling Mack the Knife in The Threepenny
  23. Opera (1976) and a Felliniesque film director in Nine (1982).
  24. The stage successes led to the film work for which he is most
  25. widely known, from the passionate political prisoner in Kiss
  26. of the Spider Woman to the loopily macabre Gomez in the two
  27. recent Addams Family movies. Thousands lined the streets of
  28. San Juan during Julia's state funeral.
